About Pet Microchips

How microchips work, why they matter, and what makes ours different.

What Is a Pet Microchip?

A pet microchip is a tiny integrated circuit — about the size of a grain of rice — encapsulated in a biocompatible glass capsule. It's injected under the skin between the shoulder blades using a hypodermic needle, similar to a routine vaccination.

Each chip contains a unique 15-digit identification number. When a handheld scanner passes over the chip, it activates via a weak radio signal and transmits its ID number. This number is then used to look up the owner's contact information in a registration database.

How Pet Recovery Works

  1. 1
Pet is found — A lost pet arrives at a shelter, veterinary clinic, or is found by a good samaritan.
  2. 2
Chip is scanned — A universal scanner reads the microchip's unique ID number.
  3. 3
Database lookup — The AAHA Universal Microchip Lookup Tool identifies Homeward Bound Pet as the registering company.
  4. 4
Owner contacted — Our 24/7 recovery hotline contacts the owner using their registered information to arrange a reunion.

What Makes Our Microchips Different

Mini Size

Our chips are smaller than standard microchips and use a narrower needle for more comfortable injection.

ISO Compliant

Meets international ISO 11784/11785 standards. USDA-approved and accepted worldwide.

Anti-Migration

Parylene coating prevents the chip from moving after injection, keeping it in place for life.

No Batteries

Passive RFID technology — no batteries to replace, no maintenance required. Lasts the lifetime of your pet.

Chip Frequencies

125 kHz (US Standard)

The most common frequency used in the United States. Compatible with scanners at virtually all US shelters and veterinary clinics.

134 kHz (ISO International)

The international standard frequency. Required for international pet travel and accepted worldwide.

Our multi-frequency scanner reads both 125 kHz and 134 kHz chips, ensuring compatibility with any microchip brand.
